Following in his father’s grappling footsteps, Alfred (Alf) Wurr, Jr. competed as an Olympic freestyle wrestler during his younger years. Coached by Reg Larocque, Bob Molle, and Nat Brigante, he medalled in many provincial, national, and international competitions during the ’80s and ’90s. Canadian Senior National Freestyle Wrestling Champion, 90 kg, 1996.
Commonwealth Freestyle Wrestling Champion, 90 kg, 1993.
World Espoir Freestyle Wrestling Champion, 90 kg, 1989, for which the Manitoba Sportswriters & Sportscasters Association (MSSA) declared him 1989 MSSA Male Athlete of the Year.
World Espoir Cup Freestyle Wrestling Champion, 90 kg, 1988.
CIAU Freestyle Wrestling Champion, 90 kg (1991, 1992, 1993, 1998).
World Schoolboy Freestyle Wrestling Champion, 67 kg, 1983.
Placing second at the 1992 and 1996 Canadian Olympic trials in the 90 kg weight class, his dream of competing for Canada at the Olympic Games, as his father had in the 1972 Summer Olympics, was not to be. He did, however, accompany the team as an alternate to the games in Barcelona, Spain and Atlanta, USA.
